Parc Güell in Barcelona, also known as Gaudi Park, is a fresh air tribute to Antoni Gaudi, a Catalan architect known for wildly original designs filled with sometimes impenetrable symbolism. It started as a housing project but later converted to a public park high above Barcelona.
At the Park
Parc Güell is one of Barcelona’s most popular tourist destinations for a reason. From the moment you enter, you’re surrounded by Gaudi’s unique and colorful designs. There are plenty of photo opportunities, so make sure to have your camera ready!
Make your way up the hill to find the best views of Barcelona. And be sure to check out the famous lizard sculpture, which has become a symbol of the park. There’s also a marketplace where you can buy souvenirs, as well as a cafe for refreshments.
Parc Güell is open daily from 9 am to 8 pm (or 10 pm during the summer months). Learn more about Barcelona’s most popular park on its official website.

About Antoni Gaudi
Antoni Gaudi was a Catalan architect, known for his wildly original designs, often filled with impenetrable symbolism. He is most famous for his work on the Sagrada Família church in Barcelona, but he also designed other notable buildings, like those in Parc Güell.
Gaudi’s unique style has had a lasting impact on architecture and continues to inspire architects today. He was a true pioneer in his field and will always be remembered as one of the greatest architects of all time. Although no one’s 100% sure, many believe that the English word “gaudy” springs from his elaborate designs.
How Can I Enjoy the Park Even if I’m Not Interested in Architecture?
Parc Güell, surrounded by nature, makes a great place for a walk in the fresh air. It’s also close to several beaches, so you can combine your visit with a trip to the beach too!
If your interests lie elsewhere, there are many other tourist attractions near Parc Güell worth exploring including:
- Sagrada Familia – a fabulous basilica, designed by Gaudi, and still under construction.
- La Rambla – “The Ramblas” is Barcelona’s most popular tourist location, a ramble filled with everything from bird cages to restaurants, tripping past the city’s oldest quarter, the Barri Gotic.
- Casa Batló – a house considered as Gaudi’s masterpiece.
Spending a day in Barcelona can be as dazzling as it is exhausting.
